Yes, you can get it in the first semester, but only if you apply strategically. Most students wait until their second semester, but departments with high undergrad enrollment need TAs every semester. Even if you don’t have research experience, solid academic performance, a relevant undergrad background, and strong communication skills can help you land one immediately. We train you on how to email professors before arriving on campus, which increases your chances drastically.

How competitive is it for international students?

Highly competitive if you wait to apply on-campus. But emailing professors early + showing teaching/tutoring experience boosts chances by ~3x

How many hours per week does a TA work?

Usually 15–20 hours/week (grading, labs, office hours). Visa rules limit you to 20 hours during the semester.
